SAYULITA residents and business owners take the
initiative to manage the sewage issue that local and state authorities have
been unable to resolve.
Meanwhile,
in the neighborhood village of SAN PANCHO, black water continues to contaminate
the estuary.

los problemas con aguas residuales en SAYULITA (1).
Mientras
en el poblado vecino SAN PANCHO las aguas negras siguen contaminando el estero.
On Tuesday, January 10th, 2017, a public
meeting was held to inform Sayulita residents and business owners about a
projected plan to resolve some of the sewage issues in town. Lead engineer,
Miguel Perez, explained the issues along with a five phase solution that would
significantly improve our street sewage issues and improve the quality of the
water in the main river. The Delgado, Jesus Rodriguez, introduced the meeting
and representatives of PRO-SAYULITA (2) and ECO-SAYULITA (3) [Jack Jones,
Oswaldo Vallego and Lina Weissman], were also in attendance to help answer
questions and inform the public of the strategy being proposed.
Over the past few years, a collaboration
between organizations such as Pro-Sayulita and Eco-Sayulita, the state
government, the municipality, the town Delgado, engineers and local vigilantes
have come together to conduct surveys, tests, and inspections to understand the
black water situation that occurs on Calle Gaviotas, particularly during busy
times. The study/proposal
discussed at the meeting was privately funded by an anonymous individual. Funds
(approximately $5,000 USD) to pay for this study/proposal were recruited by Eco
Sayulita and collected and distributed by ProSayulita, who also added funding
to ensure that the project and final bid could be completed.
The five part plan includes the following:
1. Calle Gaviotas
and Calle Navarette will be excavated and new sewage and rain water drains will
be installed. Pumps will also be added to ensure that water and sewage move
adequately.
2. The sewage pipe
that connects the south side of the river to the water plant will increase in
size and be submerged below the river bed.
3. The receptor of
the sewage pipe that crosses the river will be lowered to meet the submerged
level of the drain.
4. A concrete
structure will be placed across the river that will both serve to protect the
sewage drain and allow traffic to move across the river safely throughout the
year.
5. A pedestrian bridge will be
constructed over the river to assist individuals to cross safely.
COST:
The approximate cost of this project is
$11 million pesos ($550K USD) and the plan and bid has already been distributed
to the Municipality, State and Federal government officials and the state
Tourism Board. We are currently
awaiting news about funding and will let the community know how much private
funding is required for this project. Once the project is approved and begins,
it will take three months to complete.
IMMEDIATE ACTION:
In the meantime, in
order to avoid further sanitary issues in the area, Pro Sayulita will be
funding regular and proactive sewage pumping along Calle Gaviotas; we believe
this will resolve the issue until the full project can be completed. The first
regular pumping of the area will be on Thursday, January 26th. This will be
immediately followed by a comprehensive street cleaning so neighbors should
look for notices in advance so vehicles can be moved. Regular pumping and
street cleanings will occur based on funding.
FUNDING:
This project and
the majority of Sayulita infrastructure projects are funded by donations from
vacation rental and business owners. To support these efforts please donate
general fund dollars to Pro Sayulita here. A grassroots-based capital
fundraising movement has begun with home and business owners pledging to donate
$5,000 USD per home/business. Pro Sayulita and the organizing efforts of this
project greatly appreciate and thank you for any and all donations.
These donations are
for the general fund. If funds are needed for the Gaviotas project, a
designated fund will be created.
LOCAL INVOLVEMENT:
The local board of
Sayulita realtors is working together to implement a listing-based donation for
each property sold. They
hope to set an example for other local industries to follow.

El martes 10 de enero (2017) se realizó una
asamblea pública con el objeto de informar a los residentes y los dueños de
negocios en Sayulita sobre el proyecto que resolvería algunos de los problemas
de aguas residuales en el pueblo. El Ingeniero Miguel Pérez explicó los
problemas y la solución a desarrollarse en 5 fases, que mejoraría
significativamente los problemas de las aguas residuales, así como la calidad
del agua de nuestro río.
El delegado, Jesús Rodríguez, abrió la
asamblea y los representantes de los grupos PRO-SAYULITA (2) y ECO-SAYULITA (3)
[Jack Jones, Oswaldo Vallejo y Lina Weissman] estuvieron también presentes para
ayudar a responder todas las preguntas e informar al público de la estrategia
contemplada.
A lo largo de estos últimos años, en un
esfuerzo mancomunado, las organizaciones Pro-Sayulita y Eco-Sayulita, el
gobierno estatal, la municipalidad, el Delegado del pueblo, ingenieros y
vigilantes locales se han unido para conducir estudios, las pruebas e
inspecciones para tratar de entender mejor la situación de las aguas residuales
que frecuentemente corren en la Calle Gaviotas, particularmente durante las
épocas más concurridas por turistas. El estudio/la propuesta discutida en la
reunión fue financiada por un individuo anónimo.

El plan en
5 fases incluye lo siguiente:
1. Se excavará en las Calles Gaviotas y
Navarrete y se instalarán drenaje de aguas residuales y drenaje fluvial nuevos.
También se agregarán bombas para asegurar que las aguas residuales se
transporten adecuadamente.
2. Se ampliarán la tubería de aguas
residuales que conecta el lado sur del río con la planta de tratamiento y se
instalará por debajo del lecho de río.
3. Se bajará el receptor de la tubería de aguas
residuales que cruza el río, para esté a nivel con la tubería del drenaje.
4. Se construirá una estructura de concreto a
través del río, que servirá para proteger la tubería de drenaje de aguas
residuales, así como también permitir que el tráfico vehicular pueda cruzar al
otro lado de río de manera segura todo el año.
5. Se construirá un puente peatonal sobre el
río para que los peatones puedan cruzar de manera segura.
COSTO:
El costo aproximado del proyecto es de $11 millones
de pesos ($550.000 dólares estadounidenses) El plan y presupuesto ya han sido
entregados a la Municipalidad, a oficiales del Gobierno Estatal y Federal y a
la Secretaría de Turismo. En este momento nos encontramos esperando noticias
sobre el financiamiento y le haremos saber a la comunidad cuantos fondos
privados serán necesarios para llevar a
cabo este proyecto. Una vez que el proyecto se haya aprobado y comience, será
completado en un periodo de 3 meses.
ACCIÓN
INMEDIATA:
Mientras tanto, para evitar más problemas
sanitarios en el área, Pro Sayulita financiará el bombeo regular de aguas
residuales a lo largo de la Calle Gaviotas. Creemos que esto disminuirá el
problema hasta que el proyecto total pueda ser terminado. El primer bombeo del área
se realizará el día 26 de enero. Esto será seguido por una limpieza profunda de
la calle. Los vecinos deberán esperar notificaciones de antemano de manera que
los vehículos puedan ser reubicados. Estos bombeos regulares y las limpiezas
dependerán de los fondos que haya disponibles.
FONDOS:
Este proyecto como la mayoría de los
proyectos de infraestructura de Sayulita, son financiados con las donaciones de
los dueños de propiedades en renta para vacacionar y de los comercios. Para
apoyar estos esfuerzos, por favor, done al fondo general en dólares de Pro
Sayulita.
Ya se ha comenzado una campaña para recaudar
fondos con dueños de propiedades y comercios comprometidos a donar $5,000
dólares estadounidenses por propiedad/comercio. Pro Sayulita y el comité

What happens in SAYULITA sounds like (the start of ...) a
"private/public partnership". In
a Mexican bureaucratic environment, frequent professional incompetence and with corruption being “omnipresent”, many of
those have failed. With the work done so far and this (first) public meeting, the
project seems to be off to a good start.
Please continue the participative approach, information
(progress reports) and assure transparency.

ResponderEliminarHere now, sickness yes, stench of river overwhelming/ So sad to report this, but there does seem to be a big health issue here. Got violently sick 24 hours after playing in the ocean...couple of days later took a walk up the beach and was repulsed by the stench of the river flowing into the ocean. There is no way that is just normal runoff or treated water! It reeked of raw sewage for quite a distance. We have not gone in the ocean since and wish we never had.
I surely hope they resolve this because the town and the people are wonderful.

EliminarSayulita: dangerous to swim
Two weeks ago, my visiting family took surfing lessons at the beach in Sayulita. All three became sick. Two had stomach ailments for a few days after and the third person, who was in the water with a small cut on his leg, developed a staph infection in his knee that has put him in the hospital. He is still in the hispital with a very swollen and painful knee, and on high doses of antibiotics.
The beach communities of Nayarit need to take sewage treatment seriously, before someone dies and the tourist economy collapses.
