El 29 de marzo, 2012, el Senado solicitó al Ejecutivo federal que la SEMARNAT revoque los títulos de concesión otorgados a las empresas Desarrollos Turísticos Paraíso del Rey y Aramara en Playa del Rey, en San Blas, Nayarit, ubicado en el territorio sagrado del pueblo Wixárika.

Mexico´s Senate requests SEMARNAT (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources) to revoke government concessions for Playa del Rey, San Blas, NAYARIT.
The Senate asks SEMARNAT to revoke concession granted to developers Desarrollos Turísticos Paraíso del Rey and Aramara for land that includes a sacred area of the ethnical group called Wixáritari (Huicholes). The Huicholes are a Native American ethnic group of western central México, living in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the Mexican states of NAYARIT, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Durango. They are known as Huicholes, however, they refer to themselves as Wixáritari ("the people") in their native Huichol language. The adjectival form of Wixáritari and name for their own language is Wixárika (1). Since 2007 the land has been for sale on the internet www.inmobialiaria.com at a price of two million 300 thousand USD.
The Senate noted that the concessions granted by SEMARNAT violate the Covenant of Hauxa Manaka signed by the Governors of the States of NAYARIT, Durango, Zacatecas, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, and the Federal Government in April 2008, in favor of the preservation of the Wixárika culture and their sacred sites and ceremonial centers.

En su petición, el Senado indicó que la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) concesionó en junio de 2011 una superficie de la Playa del Rey a dichas empresas, donde existe un paraje llamado Isla del Rey, que es un sitio sagrado para el pueblo Wixárika (2) (3).
Sin embargo, “desde 2007 se ofrecían a la venta en el portal de Internet www.inmobialiaria.com terrenos como pequeña propiedad con escrituras libres de gravamen, a un precio de dos millones 300 mil dólares, a razón de 10 dólares el metro cuadrado”, añadió.
El Senado señaló que las concesiones violan el Pacto Hauxa Manaka, firmado por los gobernadores de los estados de Nayarit, Durango, Zacatecas, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, y el gobierno federal en abril de 2008. Dicho pacto es a favor de la preservación de la Cultura Wixárika y la preservación de los sitios sagrados y los centros ceremoniales en varios estados de la República, subrayó.
Por ello, demandó al gobierno federal respetar ese pacto pues beneficia el patrimonio de la nación, y en todo caso dichas tierras deberían destinarse a proyectos de beneficio público, no para intereses particulares o empresariales, abundó.
Además, en otro dictamen, el Senado solicitó a la Procuraduría General de la República (PGR) actuar contra los responsables de la destrucción de recursos forestales en la comunidad indígena huichol de Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitlán, en el estado de Jalisco.
Al respecto, el senador del Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM), Jorge Legorreta, señaló que la destrucción se registró en 2004 cuando la Secretaría de Desarrollo Urbano de Jalisco inició la construcción de una carretera estatal que atravesaría los municipios de El Alto, Bolaños Mexquitic y dos comunidades huicholas.

Mexico´s Federal Government also concessioned another sacred mountain of the Huicholes, Wirikuta, to the Canadian company First Majestic Silver Corp./ La Luz Silver Project (2) for silver mining. The Washington Post reports a “stark collision of cultures” is taking place in the desert mountains of Mexico, where the Huicholes are trying to stop this Canadian company from starting a 100-million USD silver mine (3)
The Huicholes uphold the mountains as a “cosmic portal” where the sun was born and shamans collect peyote to be used in ritual sacraments: “For them the whole mountain is a temple, and the gold and silver below the ground are there for a reason — they contribute to the energy, and it would be best if they just left it alone,” said Eduardo Guzman, an activist and spokesman for the Huicholes living in a hard-scrabble pueblo called Las Margaritas at the foot of the magic mountain.
The area in question is referred to as the La Luz Silver Project, acquired by First Majestic Minerals in 2009. First Majestic describes Real de Catorce as “an old mining district” that produced 230 million ounces of silver, mostly during the 1770s. The property consists of 22 mining concessions covering 6,327 hectares.
